The debate over passenger rail between Ohio’s three Cs (Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati) began as a reasonable conversation that deteriorated, in the aftermath of election-year politics, into a train wreck. Former governor Ted Strickland, organized labor, Keynesian economists, and a wide range of other parties all championed the idea, managing to secure a $400 million [...]

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The train has left the station, and few people in Ohio are happy about it. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Thursday that the federal government is taking away $400 million it had awarded Ohio for a passenger rail project. The train would have provided service between Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati… [...]

3C passenger rail will go 50 (not 39) miles per hour, a new study predicts. Top speeds of 79 mph will connect Cleveland and Columbus in 2.5 hours. The City of Cleveland Heights finds itself in the unenviable position of suing the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for its Stormwater program while simultaneously trying to claim the [...]

IMAGINE GETTING ON A TRAIN in Cleveland and arriving in Columbus for a meeting — relaxed, rested, and prepped for your presentation. Or your football game, or your night on the town. No more staring through the windshield at long, dreary stretches of I-71 in Richland and Morrow County. That’s already a reality for travelers [...]

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Democrats running the state controlling board pushed forward Monday to accept the first $25 million in federal funding for the 3C passenger rail project in a party-line vote that angered Republican critics. “This is an illegal act and in violation of the constitution,” sputtered Sen. David Goodman, the only lawyer on the [...]

The Ohio Department of Transportation wants the state Controlling Board to release $25 million today for design, engineering and environmental planning for a proposed passenger rail link among Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. COLUMBUS, Ohio – State Sen. Shannon Jones had been barreling down I-71 on March 23 as she made her way to Columbus in the pre-dawn hours. “Shhhh…don’t tell anyone but I’m driving twice as fast on 71 to Columbus as Strickland’s slow-speed rail,” the Springboro Republican messaged on her Twitter account after completing her commute. “Even [...]

In January, Gov. Ted Strickland announced that Ohio had received $400 million in federal stimulus money to develop a “3C Corridor” passenger rail system linking Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Immediately, questions flew: Will the trains go fast enough? How many stops? Who will ride it? Will the benefits be worth the money? hiVelocity caught up [...]

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senate President Bill Harris suggested Thursday that Republicans may derail the $400 million 3-C Corridor passenger rail project designed to link Ohio’s major cities as he asked detailed questions about the rail line’s costs, viability and ridership. “Based on what I have learned so far, I am not convinced that the proposed 3-C Rail [...]

I love trains. I am a complete sucker for convenient rail travel. When ever anyone asks I feel the urge to gush forward on the amazing journey I had from Akron to Milwaukee back in 2001/2002. The seat was wide and reclined so nicely that catching a train at some ungodly and chilly morning hour [...]

Just me, or is it truly refreshing to see a high level leader – in this case Ohio Governor Ted Strickland – get visibly tweaked about the constant naysaying and pathetic pace of progress? Especially over public transit. Near the very end Gov. Strickland says “my brother, this is 2010.” Hilarious… (go to article)

WASHINGTON — Seventy-nine mph is not high speed. Yet that’s the fastest that passenger trains between Cleveland and Cincinnati will go when they start running, possibly as soon as 2012. This puzzles and disappoints some Ohioans, especially because President Barack Obama announced new rail lines on Jan. 28 as cogs in a national “high speed” network. [...]

Winners were announced last Friday (January 29th) for the third annual Cleveland Design Competition. This year’s project focus was the Lakefront Station (the current Amtrak site), which required contestants to design a multi-modal transit center that could double as a pedestrian path bridging the Mall with North Coast Harbor. The winners—Mario Caceres and Christian Canonico [...]

With $400 million in federal funds, state transportation leaders say they can bring inter-city passenger trains back to the Buckeye state and connect Cleveland to Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. COLUMBUS, Ohio – A passenger rail pep rally broke out in the Statehouse Rotunda this afternoon as Gov.
